For veggie gardens; at the first sign of freeze, apply a heavy layer of compost (for added warmth) onto your garden and tent with lightweight SOMOS UV frost blankets in late November. Leave frost fabric tents on your veggie garden until mid-March - this has an added boon of protecting vulnerable leafy greens from hungry winter pests. Use frost blankets for a relatively pest-free, warm, winter crop.
For tender ornamental specimens this winter: try decorating your ornamentals with holiday lights for both warmth and holiday spirit, and covering with a frost blanket (attach with included clothes pins) whenever wind rises up and temperatures dip down.
