Ways to enhance your yard…that aren't plants

Here at SOMOS, we are always looking for ways to make the transition between indoors and outdoors more seamless. We believe that a beautiful yard is an extension of your home, and should reflect the vibrant life you live! While the city of Austin is great for growing a variety of different plants, there are other elements that can contribute to making your outdoor space more enjoyable!

Water features contribute both visually and sonically to your landscape, drawing your attention and creating a conversation piece. The sound of falling water creates a peaceful sort of microclimate, perfect if your yard is going to be used for relaxation, or in this case as an entry feature!

Another feature we love is using aggregates as paving. Depending on the aesthetic you’re going for, we’d recommend Tejas Black, pea gravel, or decomposed granite! Many would say the look is a great alternate option to more traditional hardscape materials (i.e. concrete).

If you’re going for a more interactive space, we love incorporating games such as bocce, cornhole, or you could even try an outdoor jenga set! Fire pits add an additional element to any yard, and extend the use of your space so even in the winter months you can be outdoors.

Don’t forget to install some steel posts with string lights attached! These fun bulbrite lights go well in any yard, and create a more inviting aesthetic---plus they provide great lighting for a photo op!

If you’re looking for a way to introduce squirrels or birds to your yard, check out our NO/NO Bird Feeder by clicking here! We love watching the squirrels from our office windows!
